Ersin Kalaycioglu

kalayciProf. Ersin Kalaycioglu received his undergraduate degree from Istanbul University, Faculty of Economics in 1973 (major Economics, minors Political Science and Statistics). He continued his education at The University of Iowa, Department of Political Science, and received his M.A. in 1975, and his Ph. D. in 1977. Dr. Kalaycioglu started his academic career at Istanbul University, Faculty of Economics from Fall 1977 through Spring 1982, and at the Faculty of Political Science of the same university between Fall 1982 and Spring 1984. Dr. Kalaycioglu had been employed as a full-time faculty member at Bogazici University from Fall 1984 to Spring 2002. He also taught at the University of Iowa, Department of Political Science during Spring and Summer of the 1980-1981 academic year, and at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities during the 1989-1990, and 1998-1999 academic years in the capacity of visiting scholar. Between 2002-2004 Prof. Kalaycioglu taught at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Sabanci University. He served as the Rector of Isik University between 2004-2007. Dr. Kalaycioglu teaches at Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences since September 2007.

Prof. Kalaycioglu designed and conducted various survey research projects, both alone and in collaboration with other colleagues. He participated in the design and fieldwork of "Political Conditions of Rural Economic Development Project," in collaboration with Ilter Turan. That project was conducted under the auspices of the University of Iowa during 1978 and 1980.

He designed a study of the institutionalization process of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA), and surveyed the career patterns and political attitudes of the deputies of the XVIIth Assembly in 1984, and of the XVIIIth Assembly in 1988. The data thus collected were used in several articles and book chapters.

Dr. Kalaycioglu participated in designing and execution of the field work of a study of the socio-economic conditions and outlooks of the Turkish households, using a representative multi-stage stratified clustered sample of them, in collaboration with Yilmaz Esmer and Hamit Fisek of Bogazici University, in summer 1986. The data from these surveys were published as research reports by the same principal authors in 1986 and 1987 by TUSIAD. He designed and conducted a study of the political attitudes of the Turkish fifth-grade elementary school students in the province of Bursa in collaboration with Ali Yasar Saribay of Uludag University, Bursa, Turkey during 1987 and 1988. The data thus collected were published as articles and book chapters by both principal investigators in the 1980s.

Dr. Kalaycioglu participated in the survey study of "Turkish Values" as a principal investigator with Ustun Erguder and Yilmaz Esmer of Bogazici University, Department of Political Science in the Fall of 1990. The survey instrument used in the study was developed by a team of scholars headed by Ronald Inglehart of the Institute for Social Research (ISR) of the University of Michigan, and used in 44 countries to measure "World Values." The Turkish version of the survey instrument was developed and administered by the above-mentioned principal investigators. The data collected from that study were published in several articles and book chapters by Dr. Kalaycioglu and Yilmaz Esmer separately.  

Dr. Kalaycioglu participated in the design and fieldwork of a survey of municipalities in cooperation with Nihat Falay of Istanbul University and Umit Ozkirimli of Bilgi University, with the specific purpose of determining municipal fiscal practices, and related problems and matters in the Spring of 1996. The data collected from that study were published as a research report in 1997.

He collaborated with Yilmaz Esmer who directed a study of Turkish Values, as part of the World Values Survey of 1996-1997, which in turn is carried out under the direction of Ronald Inglehart of the University of Michigan. The data collected in that survey were used in several articles and book chapters published by Dr. Kalaycioglu.

He conducted a panel study of the Turkish voting age population in October 2002 and February 2003 on political participation and voting behavior with Ustun Erguder and Ali Carkoglu. The data of that survey have been published in several articles by Dr. Kalaycioglu and Ali Carkoglu separately and jointly by them as a book titled Turkish Democracy Today in 2007.

Dr. Kalaycioglu conducted a field survey of attitudes and orientations toward women in society and politics in Turkey in collaboration with Binnaz Toprak of Bogazici University, during July 2003. The data of that survey were published as a research report by the following title: Turkiye’de Kadinin Sosyal ve Siyasal Statusu in 2004.

He conducted a national field survey of “socio-political orientations and attitudes in Turkey” in collaboration with Ali Carkoglu of Sabancı University in April and May 2006, the data of which were used in several articles and in the book called the Rising Tide of Conservatism in Turkey with Ali Carkoglu in 2009.

Dr. Kalaycioglu conducted a national field survey of voting behavior during June - July 2007 and September October 2007 with Ali Carkoglu of Sabancı University, the data of which were published in several articles by Dr. Kalaycioglu and Ali Carkoglu separately.

He conducted the national field survey on religiosity in 2008 - 2009 with Ali Carkoglu, which is part of an international project of the International Social Survey Program (ISSP) and sponsored by TUBITAK. The data collected in that survey were analyzed and presented as a research report in 2009 in collaboration with Ali Carkoglu of Sabancı University.

Currently Dr. Kalaycioglu is working on another national field survey of attitudes toward social inequality in Turkey as part of the International Social Survey Program (ISSP), which examines social inequality in 48 nation - states around the globe. This survey is also sponsored by TUBITAK.

Prof. Kalaycioglu is a Board Member of Turkish Economic and Social Studies Foundation, and also a member of Turkish Political Science Association, Turkish Social Science Association, and Middle Eastern Studies Association of North America (MESA).
