A new report by IPC Director Fuat Keyman and Özge Kemahlıoğlu, member of the Sabancı University faculty, sheds light on the democracy perception in Turkey ahead of the elections on June 12. The report displays the growing uncertainty among the Turkish electorate about the direction of the Turkish democracy. It projects people's concern that the democracy in Turkey in its current form is very much a "flawed democracy." Furthermore, the report finds that Turkey carries the risk of becoming a "hybrid regime," where the democratic institutions of the country stay intact, but are controlled by authoritarian governments. It also highlights the lack of democratic consolidation in Turkey and how different constituencies have different interpretations of and goals pertaining to the democratic system and freedoms in Turkey.
National Democratic Institute (NDI) and Metropoll, a Turkish public opinion research consultancy, contributed to the preparation of this interesting report.
