Project: “The "Green New Deal for Turkey" to Tackle the Climate Crisis”
The interconnectedness of economic, social, and ecological problems requires a simultaneous response. The Green New Deal (GND), which aims to decarbonize the economy by transforming industries, regulating markets, and incentivizing lifestyle changes, is argued to be the only realistic proposal to tackle the “triple crisis.” Having been on an unsustainable growth path for so long, the Turkish economy needs to be transformed as well. A “Green New Deal for Turkey” has the potential to revive economic activities and reduce unemployment by creating a climate-friendly economy.
This project aims to fill the gap by focusing on three questions that will be important in the design of the “Green New Deal for Turkey.” After introducing the concept of the GND and outlining the EU’s European Green Deal, the project aims to closely examine the Turkish economy and measure the risks it will be exposed to in case of no transformation and to calculate the green net job creation within transformed sectors.
