Çiğdem Bozdağ is a researcher in the field of communications and media studies. She was an Assistant Professor for Communication and Media Studies at Kadir Has University, Istanbul.
Bozdağ’s research project for her Mercator-IPC Fellowship is titled “Intercultural Networking in Education through Information and Communication Technologies: Turkish Schools Meet Germany.”
Bozdağ completed her PhD at the University of Bremen in January 2013. In her thesis, she analyzed the websites of the Moroccan and Turkish diaspora and their role in ethnic community building within a mediated emerging social space. During her doctoral studies, she worked as a lecturer at the University of Bremen. From 2008 to 2010, she worked at the same university as a Research Assistant in the Deutsche Forschungsgesellschaft (DFG)-funded research project “Communicative Connectivity of Ethnic Minorities: The Integrative and Segregative Potential of Digital Media for Diasporas.” Moreover, she worked on an EU-funded research project titled “ICT and Cultural Diversity: The Potential of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for the Promotion of Cultural Diversity in the EU.”
Bozdağ’s main research fields are intercultural communication, globalization, new media, and migration studies. She has been teaching courses on similar topics at the University of Bremen and at Kadir Has University, Istanbul. Bozdağ received her MA from the University of Bremen in Media Culture and her BA is from Boğaziçi University in Political Science and International Relations.

Mercator-IPC Alumni Retreat 2019
The fourth Mercator-IPC Alumni Retreat took place on May 3-5, 2019 at Ağva Robin’s Nest Eco Resort. The event began with speeches from Senior Scholar & Research and Academic Affairs Coordinator Senem Aydın-Düzgit, Mercator-IPC Fellowship Coordinator Pelin Oğuz, and Stiftung Mercator Head of Project Management Office Daniel Grütjen.
The retreat included a fishbowl session on “Artificial Intelligence and Governance” by Ofer Engel and Taha Yasseri, moderated by Çiğdem Bozdağ; an “Audiovisuals in Science” workshop by Ricardo Leizaola; a “New methods for new challenges: Hybrid mapping of local environmental knowledge in the time of the Anthropocene” workshop by Christian Reichel; a yoga session with Tuygun Oruç; a coffee talk on “Media and Activism” by Haluk Mert Bal; and a coffee talk on “The Right to the City in the Turkish Context: Urban Movements, Neighborhoods and the Gezi Uprising” by Cihan Baysal Uzunçarşılı.

IPC-Sabancı University-Stiftung Mercator Initiative convened a symposium titled “Media.Brigde.Cultures” on December 10-11, 2015 at Kadir Has University. This event is initiated by Mercator-IPC Fellow Çiğdem Bozdağ in cooperation Jacobs University Bremen, Kadir Has University Communication Faculty, Center for Media, Communication and Information Research (ZeMKI), and University of Bremen.
