The Eastern Mediterranean and EU-Turkey Relations: Opening a New Chapter

Istanbul Policy Center and the Istituto Affari Internazionali organized a webinar on the Eastern Mediterranean and EU-Turkey Relations: Opening a New Chapter on March 11. This meeting was a part of the Understanding Complexity and Capacity for Resilience in Turkey series organized by the Istanbul Policy Center-Sabancı University-Stiftung Mercator Initiative.

The Welcoming of the 2020/21 Mercator-IPC Fellows

The Welcoming of the 2020/21 Mercator-IPC Fellows was held on October 19 at The Seed. The event began with welcoming remarks by Yusuf Leblebici, followed by remarks from Fuat Keyman and Michael Schwarz. The event continued with a speech by Mercator-IPC Visiting Senior Fellow Pankaj Mishra and a Q&A section moderated by Senior Scholar Senem Aydın-Düzgit. The speech was followed by a movie screening that introduced the 2020/21 Mercator-IPC Fellows Ahmet Atıl Aşıcı, David Samuel Williams, Elena Dück, Jan Schierkolk, Karolína Augustová, Michael Kaeding, and Özge Geyik.

Nature and Climate Talks 7 – “Global Climate Change and Anatolian Biogeography: Understanding the Past, Projecting the Future”

Climate Café Talks 10 – Studying Turkey's Energy Policies in Light of Social Sciences

The tenth in the Climate Café Talks series took place with Begüm Özkaynak’s talk on “Studying Turkey's Energy Policies in Light of Social Sciences (Türkiye’nin Enerji Politikalarını Sosyal Bilimler Işığında Okumak)” on February 12, 2020 at IPC Karaköy.

Differentiated Integration in EU-Turkey Relations

The Istanbul Policy Center–Sabancı University–Stiftung Mercator Initiative hosted Mercator-IPC Visiting Senior Fellow Frank Schimmelfennig in Istanbul. During his visit, Schimmelfennig participated in the panel “Ever Looser Union? Differentiated Integration in Europe” on January 30, 2020 at METU; gave a seminar on the same topic on February 3, 2020 at Sabancı University; and held a breakfast talk on “Differentiated Integration in EU-Turkey Relations: Prospects and Obstacles” on February 4, 2020 at the Galata Istanbul Hotel.

Political Ecology of the Agricultural Transformation in Turkey within the Context of Climate Change

The Istanbul Policy Center–Sabancı University–Stiftung Mercator Initiative organized the conference “Political Ecology of the Agricultural Transformation in Turkey within the Context of Climate Change (İklim Değişikliği Bağlamında Türkiye’de Tarımın Dönüşümünün Politik Ekolojisi)” on January 6, 2020 at IPC Karaköy. The conference was followed by a roundtable meeting on January 7, 2020 at IPC Karaköy.

The sixth in the Nature and Climate Talks series took place with Kiraz Erciyas Yavuz’s talk on “The Impact of Climate Change on Birds (Değişen İklimin Kuşlara Etkisi) ” on January 14, 2020 at IPC Karaköy.

The Initiative convened the panel titled “2019 Madrid Climate Summit – Impressions from COP25” with the participation of Climate Change Studies Coordinator Ümit Şahin, 2019/20 Mercator-IPC Fellow Sinan Erensü, and Semra Cerit Mazlum from Marmara University, on December 19, 2019 at IPC Karaköy.

The Protests in Lebanon: Perspectives on Context, Dynamics and Future

2018/19 Mercator-IPC Fellow Maissam Nimer organized a panel on “The Protests in Lebanon: Perspectives on Context, Dynamics and Future” on December 10, 2019 at IPC Karaköy. Raja Abillama and Mert Arslanalp from Boğaziçi University and Freelance Journalist Bissane El Cheikh participated as speakers.

COP25 Madrid – Social and Economic Co-Benefits of Climate Change Mitigation: Employment, Industrial Development, and Energy Transition
