Klaus Kreiser is Emeritus Professor at Bamberg University in the Department of Turkish Language, History and Culture. Previously, he held the chair of Turkish Language, History and Civilization at Bamberg University until 2002. He received his doctoral degree at the University of Munich in 1972 after which he taught at the institution between 1975 and 1977 and also between 1981 and 1984. Between 1977 and 1980, he was a research fellow affiliated with the German Archaeological Institute in Istanbul. Additionally, he has extensive international teaching and research experiences at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris), Harvard University, and the University of Chicago.
His research areas have focused on Ottoman and modern Turkish history and civilization. Currently, he is writing a book on the Ottoman traveler, Evliya Chelebi, and a volume on public monuments and memorials in the Islamic world.
