Ömer Madra
2012/13 Mercator-IPC Senior Fellow

Ömer Madra is one of the co-founders and editor-in-chief of the radio channel “Açık Radyo.” Furthermore, he worked as a lecturer at Istanbul Bilgi University’s International Relations and Political Science Department.

Between 1999 and 2000 Ömer Madra wrote for the Newspaper Yeni Binyıl. In 1996 he published a book titled Rüzgara Karşı (Against the Wind) consisting of articles covering various themes such as science, art, cinema, theatre, music, food, life, and sports. From 1985 until 1988, Madra worked as an editor and writer for the journals Playboy, Şehir, Gergedan, and Start. In 1985 Ömer Madra published his book Migrant Workers and International Law as a result of his research during his scholarship in France granted by the Council of Europe. In 1977 Ömer Madra earned his PhD, with his thesis entitled “European Convention on Human Rights.”

Climate Change Cluster Coordinator and Senior Scholar Ümit Şahin, Middle East Technical University Faculty Member Murat Türkeş, 2012/13 Mercator-IPC Fellow Ömer Lütfi Şen, 2013/14 Mercator-IPC Fellow Levent Kurnaz's report Contemporary Developments in Climate Change: IPCC 2013 Report (İklim Değişikliğinde Son Gelişmeler: IPCC 2013 Raporu) was published in December 2013.

Recent Developments in Climate Change

IPC-Sabancı University-Stiftung Mercator Initiative convened a panel discussion titled “Recent Developments in Climate Change” on October 7, 2013 with the participation of Murat Türkeş, Mercator-IPC Fellow Levent Kurnaz, Mercator-IPC Fellow Ömer Lütfi Şen, Mercator-IPC Senior Fellow Ömer Madra as speakers and Climate Studies Coordinator Ümit Şahin as a moderator.

We are Losing Our Planet: We Must Not Accept This

Istanbul Manifesto to Fight Climate Change titled “We are losing our planet: We must not accept this” was declared during an event convened by Mercator-IPC Senior Fellow Ömer Madra on March 23, 2013 at IPC. 

More than 130 representatives from politics and civil society gathered at Istanbul Policy Center to express their support for the initiative. A number of representatives gave short speeches stating the reasons why for them and their institution climate change poses an imminent threat. The diversity of the institutions and organizations, such as environmental groups, religious and political institutions, human rights organizations and the arts highlighted that all segments of society have to jointly fight climate change together.

The Earth is Sounding the Alarm: Why Doesn't Anyone Listen? Strategies to Raise Awareness of Climate Change in Turkey

IPC-Sabancı University-Stiftung Mercator Initiative convened a meeting with 2012/13 Mercator-IPC Fellow Ömer Madra. Ömer Madra, chair of the workshop, gave a keynote speech titled “The Earth is Sounding the Alarm: Why Doesn’t Anyone Listen? Strategies to Raise Awareness of Climate Change in Turkey” on , January 29, 2013 at IPC.

Welcoming Event for the 2012/13 Mercator – IPC Fellows

On September 25, 2012 the welcoming event for the first Mercator-IPC Fellows took place in Istanbul. The event opened with the warm welcoming remarks of Nihat Berker, President of Sabanci University, Bernhard Lorentz, President of Stifung Mercator, and Fuat Keyman, IPC Director. Mercator-IPC Senior Fellow Cem Özdemir, Co-Chairman of the German green party “Alliance 90/The Greens”, gave a keynote speech entitled “Europe at the Crossroads: Why Turkey Matters”. Subsequently, the 2012/13 Mercator – IPC Fellows were introduced through short video clips.

The ensuing panel discussion, entitled “A Silver Lining: German – Turkish Cooperation in Turbulent Times,” offered an intellectually stimulating debate between Kemal Dervis, Member of the IPC Executive Board and Vice President of the Brookings Institution, Ömer Madra, Mercator – IPC Senior Fellow and Co-Founder of Acik Radyo, Secil Pacaci Elitok, Mercator – IPC Fellow, and Ambassador Klaus Scharioth (ret.), Dean of the Mercator Fellowship on International Affairs and Member of the IPC’s International Advisory Council. The discussion was chaired by Ayse Kadioglu, Senior Scholar at IPC and Professor at Sabanci University.
