The ratification of the Paris Agreement in 2021 and the announcement of the net-zero target for 2053 marked a significant turning point for Turkey's energy sector. The use of domestic energy sources and technologies and energy efficiency are at the heart of Turkey's national energy policy on the path to achieving a net-zero emissions economy.
This vision has accelerated the increase in renewable energy capacity across the country and R&D efforts to develop domestically produced technologies. However, achieving net zero will require the creation of a long-term energy transformation and climate strategy for 2053 and detailed planning that analyzes all impacts.
In this context, 2024 has been a critical year in which Turkey has demonstrated its determination and ambitious goals in the field of energy transition. 2024 stands out as a year in which renewable energy investments have accelerated and the targets set for renewable energy, energy efficiency, digitalization, and electricity grid investments have been revised upward in the announced policy documents.
The report “Turkey Energy Transition Outlook 2024,” prepared by the SHURA Energy Transition Center, evaluates Turkey's energy transition process under the headings of “renewable energy,” “energy efficiency,” and “electrification,” analyzing trends from past years to the present with a focus on 2024. The report aims to evaluate Turkey's energy transition in all its aspects, within the framework of the overall energy outlook, production-consumption, emissions, supply security, costs, and policies, and to present a forward-looking vision.
