The West and the Evolving Multipolar Order

The IPC-Mercator Commentary “The West and the Evolving Multipolar Order” by 2024/25 Mercator-IPC Senior Fellow Heinrich Kreft was published in February 2025.

Executive Summary

The report argues that the world is rapidly shifting from a Western-dominated order to a multipolar system, driven largely by the rise of the Global South and China. While the G7 nations previously controlled the majority of the global economy, their share is shrinking, while non-Western nations are gaining wealth and political influence.

China is at the center of this shift, using its massive economic growth and projects like the Belt and Road Initiative to expand its global reach. Simultaneously, the BRICS group (led by China and Russia) is expanding to challenge Western institutions and reduce reliance on the U.S. dollar. The report concludes that the West cannot stop this transition and must instead find ways to cooperate with these rival powers on shared global threats like climate change, rather than trying to isolate them.
