Türkiye'de Milliyetçilik Algısı

Perceptions of Nationalism in Türkiye

2021/22 Mercator-IPC Senior Fellow Hatem Ete and Independent Sociologist Ferhat Kentel's report titled "Türkiye'de Milliyetçilik Algısı (Perception of Nationalism in Turkey)" was published in June 2022.

Executive Summary

Our study entitled Perceptions of Nationalism in Turkey indicates that the commonly held assumption that nationalism is increasing should not be accepted uncritically. Rather, it underscores the need for more nuanced and analytically refined questions that account for multiple and intersecting dynamics in order to obtain a more accurate assessment of the intensity and character of nationalist tendencies within society. Moreover, we contend that nationalism is not a static phenomenon but one that continues to evolve and transform through its articulation with various social, political, and economic dynamics. Accordingly, treating the contemporary landscape as fixed and unchanging would be analytically misleading. This study aims to capture a snapshot of the current moment; however, as nationalism continues to evolve and interact with shifting dynamics, further empirical research will be required.
