Workshop Report: Syrian Refugees in Istanbul, Report

Research Associate Auveen Woods, Visiting Researcher Bianca Benvenuti, and Intern Nihal Kayalı's report “Syrian Refugees in Istanbul" was published in May 2016.

Executive Summary

This report summarizes the workshop "Syrian Refugees in Istanbul: Perspectives and Challenges", hosted by the Istanbul Policy Center in Karaköy, Istanbul, on 2 April 2016. Held under the Chatham House Rule, the workshop aimed to provide a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by government institutions, civil society organisations, and Syrian communities in Istanbul while highlighting innovative approaches and sharing examples of good practice.

As Turkey's largest city, Istanbul is home to an estimated population of at least 15 million people, including a substantial Syrian refugee population, many of whom are expected to remain in the city for the foreseeable future. The scale and diversity of the metropolitan area create a complex environment in which the experiences, needs, and strategies of both Turkish residents and Syrians vary considerably across different districts.

The workshop brought together a broad range of stakeholders, including representatives of local municipalities, civil society organisations, community associations, academics, volunteers, and Syrian refugees. This diverse participation enabled the exchange of perspectives from multiple sectors involved in responding to refugee-related challenges.

The discussions focused on identifying the challenges encountered by different stakeholders, sharing successful practices, exploring innovative solutions, strengthening communication among local, national, and refugee actors, and developing recommendations for new approaches that respond to the needs of Syrian refugees while supporting their integration into local communities.
